M A H J O N G G

We've been wanting to publish a Chinese tiles game for a long time.
Several years ago Activision came out with SHANGHAI, which claimed to be the
definitive tile game for the C-64, but I wasn't satisfied with it. In this
game you are to scan a bunch of tiles on a screen and pick out pairs. The
Activision game's tiles were hard to see, even on a good monitor, and since
the whole idea of the game is to "see" pairs, this seemed to me to be a
fatal flaw. So we waited for a better version.
Bob Cook came through. He sent me a version for the C-64, then a few
weeks later sent me the version on this disk. I was pleased to see that he
made the C-128 version use the 80-column screen and added some extra
features, like multiple tile layouts. There's even a custom screen editor
so you can design your own layouts. This fits the LOADSTAR 128 philosophy
exactly -- the C-128 version of any program SHOULD be better than the C-64
version.
But first, let me explain the game for those who haven't encountered it
before. MAH JONGG uses the tiles associated with the ancient Chinese game,
but it is not a computer simulation of the game. Mah Jongg is a Gin Rummy-
like game played by three or four people using the tiles as cards. Our MAH
JONGG is an unlimited series of puzzles for you to solve. There are 132
tiles, with four tiles for each distinct pattern. They are similar to our
playing cards with each suit having a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
They are laid out in a pattern with tiles on top of tiles, up to a
height of six. Your task is to remove the tiles from the playfield by
removing pairs. It sounds simple, since there are four of most patterns,
and unlike Concentration, the tiles are face up, but it's not. Be happy to
win one game out of ten.
Another challenge is that only some of the tiles are available for
removing. For a tile to be available, it must not have a tile on top of it,
and cannot be blocked in on both horizontal sides by other tiles. If it is
"free" on one horizontal side, it is available for removing. Keep in mind
that the colors represent "levels". A tile can be blocked by a tile to its
side that is on the same level -- or on a HIGHER level. If the tile to its
side is on a LOWER level, then it's free.
Don't worry about making an illegal play -- the program won't let you.
You'll get a buzz if you try to remove a tile that's blocked.
Bob cleverly uses color to show the height of a pile. There is a
legend on the screen to show you how many hidden tiles are beneath any tile.
To win the game you must remove all tiles, so the strategy is usually to
remove tiles from the tall piles first. But then, it's important to remove
tiles from the outside first, since they "block" the removal of tile in the
interior. As you can see, this is not a trivial "see and do" game. You
will have decisions to make.
GAME PLAY
---------
To start a game choose one of the six designs from the alternate design
menu. Since the tiles are shuffled and placed randomly in the pattern you
choose, you can play this game forever and probably never run into the same
layout twice.
Choose a tile by moving the arrow, using the joystick Port #2 or the
CRSR keys, and pressing FIRE or RETURN. If the tile is available, (no tile
on both sides), the tile will change to purple and flash, indicating that it
is the tile to match. Move the arrow to another matching, available tile
and press FIRE or RETURN again. The two tiles will be removed, and, if
there are tiles underneath them, they will be revealed. If the tiles don't
match, or if a tile is not available, an appropriate error message will
appear.
When no more matches are possible you'll receive a message to that
effect. Press ESCape to display the Main Menu. If all of the tiles are
cleared the end of the game will be signaled by the ALL CLEAR signal; a
siren. Press FIRE or RETURN to play the same layout. To quit the game
press the STOP key.
SCORING
-------
You have 99 seconds to make a move. At first, this is plenty of time
since there are probably several pairs showing. Later in the game this 99-
second limit can make for a frantic moment when you KNOW there's a pair left
but you can't find it. You're given a score based on the number of tiles
removed and the time it took you to remove them.
STRATEGY
--------
Other than keeping an eye out for matching tiles there are only a
couple of things to watch out for. If there are three identical tiles
showing, pick the two that will open up the most other tiles.
If all four of a pattern are showing, then rejoice because you can
simply remove all four (two at a time) without worrying that you may be
removing the wrong ones. Likewise, if you see a pair and you've previously
removed a similar pair, then remove the new pair with complete confidence.
As mentioned before, it's usually best to remove the tiles from tall
piles first. After all, they have the most tiles underneath that they're
blocking. Similarly, the tiles on the outside of the layout also block the
most tiles. Remove a light blue tile (the lowest level) last, since it
probably won't free up any new tiles.
CUSTOM SCREEN
-------------
To create a custom layout press the Commodore key at the main menu. The
current custom design will be displayed. Place the arrow on a tile and
press 0 to blank the tile or change the level of the tile by pressing a
number from 1 to 6. When you are satisfied with the new design, and the
tile TOTAL equals 132, press the Commodore key and save it to memory. If
you want to save the new design to disk press [y] at the prompt. Press
ESCape to return to the main menu.
BOTTOM LINE
------------
This game may appear to be trivial at first glance, but play it a
couple of times and it becomes addictive. Because of the way that the
program lays down the tiles, there is ALWAYS a way to remove all of the
tiles, but you'd be surprised how difficult it can be. The program tells
you when there are no more matches possible, but you will undoubtedly run
into a situation where the program says there's still a match available, but
you can't find it. Have faith -- the program never lies, so there must be a
match you're missing.
Add this program to your games collection. It's a good one.
